Ischemic Stroke The majority of strokes (87%) occur when blood vessels to the brain become narrowed or clogged with fatty deposits called plaque. This cuts off blood flow to brain cells. A stroke caused by lack of blood reaching part of the brain is called an ischemic stroke. High blood pressure is a leading risk factor for ischemic stroke.

Ischemic stroke

A stroke is a medical emergency. There are two types - ischemic and hemorrhagic. Ischemic stroke is the most common type. It is usually caused by a blood clot that blocks or plugs a blood vessel in the brain. This keeps blood from flowing to the brain. Within minutes, brain cells begin to die. Another cause is stenosis, or narrowing of the artery.

It is immediately obvious that experimental models of stroke can cover only individual specific aspects of this multifaceted disease. A basic understanding of the principal molecular pathways induced by ischemia-like conditions comes already from in vitro studies. Stroke strikes about 700,000 Americans each year, but the vast majority of people survive. Close to 5 million stroke survivors are managing their health today.

From lifestyle changes to medical interventions, learn how you can manage your risks. Ischemic strokes occur when blood supply is cut off to part of the brain. This type of stroke accounts for the majority of all strokes. The blocked blood flow in an ischemic stroke may be caused by a blood clot or by atherosclerosis, a disease which causes narrowing of the arteries over time. Ischemic strokes can be caused by a blockage anywhere along the arteries feeding the brain. An Ischemic Stroke occurs when a clot or a mass clogs a blood vessel, cutting off the blood flow to brain cells.

Ischemic strokes are caused by a blockage of a blood vessel. Hemorrhagic strokes are caused by sudden bleeding in the brain.
